Gino’s Brick Oven Pizza just opened a new branch in Serendra and we wasted no time in checking it out. In fact, they are still on soft opening but we just couldn’t wait any longer to get another taste of their infamous buratta.

For starters, we had an order of their Buratta Caprese (P355) which had one huge buratta, halved cherry tomatoes, a bed of pesto on the bottom, basil leaves, and all were drizzled in olive oil. This is best eaten with their warm bread rolls.

We ordered two pasta dishes to share among four of us – Salted Egg (P190) and Stuffed Chicken (P355). The Salted Egg Pasta has fettuccini, bacon, salted egg, cream and topped with grated parmesan cheese. It was good but was a little too rich for my taste so I asked for a slice of lemon to cut the richness. After a good drizzle of fresh lemon juice, I easily finished my portion which was creamy and salty and delicious all at the same time. The Stuffed Chicken Pasta on the other hand comes with aglio olio spaghetti, a roll of chicken breast stuffed with ground pork and coated in cream sauce. The best part of this dish was the tasty chicken roll with ground beef inside. If you are ordering this dish, make sure you have time to spare because it takes around 15-20 mins to cook. But if you ask me, it is well worth the wait.

For our pizza, we got the SMEGG (P420). It is topped with their homemade sausage, mushroom, eggs, gouda and cream. I enjoyed my slices with a drizzling of their Spicy Honey and some drops of tabasco.

To down all these carbs with, we also ordered a pitcher of their Iced Tea (P120). I liked it because it did not taste like commercial powdered iced tea mix.

All in all, I loved my second time at Gino’s Brick Oven Pizza. I would definitely go back just for the buratta alone.

When I visited Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, I made sure that I would have my fill of their infamous pho or Vietnamese noodle soup. I was hellbent on trying as much pho as I could that it was actually my first meal in Vietnam (our breakfast in Ben Thanh Market). But there was one restaurant that made its mark on me, mainly because their noodle soup was really good.

The restaurant was just an accidental discovery but it was already way past lunch time and it was the only restaurant we spotted around the area. We didn’t know anything about the place but we bit the bullet and went in anyway. Upon entering, I was appeased when I saw one wall plastered with photos of locals enjoying their food. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if locals frequent the place, yeah?

When we got seated, we were immediately served with some sort of pastry. We weren’t exactly sure if they were complimentary but Timmy was too hungry to bother so she went ahead and ate one. I was saving room for my main meal so I only took a small bite off of hers. It was actually delicious! The pastry was flaky, and the filling (which I suspect to be minced pork) was tasty and savory.

Also on the table were the usual accompaniment for pho – mung sprouts, cilantro and chives. There were also some additional condiments like garlic oil, sliced peppers, marinated garlic and three types of sauces that I honestly didn’t use so I never got to identify them.

After a short while, our orders were served. Timmy and I got the same thing which had everything on it. Wantons, shrimp, pork balls, and egg noodle soup. My favorite part was the “pork chops” which were actually boiled pork reminiscent of our very own nilaga. The pork pieces were so delightfully tender and the broth was really tasty. I think the dish cost around ~Php120, honestly a fair price for such good quality.

If I ever have the chance to go back to Ho Chi Minh, I would definitely pay this restaurant another visit. If you’re going to HCMC, this is a must-try! It’s around 8 minutes by foot from Ben Thanh Market.

It feels like it has been ages since Tim Ho Wan opened its first store here in the Philippines and I have been wantingto eat there ever since. Consistently, I see a buttload of photos of their infamous pork buns which made me even more eager to try it for myself. But since I hate crowds and I always see a long waiting line outside their branch in SM Megamall, I get turned off and always walk away looking for somewhere else to eat. Until one Saturday evening, when Cris and I were deciding where to have our dinner. There were no lines outside Tim Ho Wan so it was instantaneously decided, Tim Ho Wan for dinner it is!

(Spicy) Pork Ribs Rice | Php170
The dish was served piping hot, and the pepper slices on top made it even hotter. The pork ribs were tender; with the right mix of meat, fat, bone, and cartilage. Cris enjoyed this so much, he ate 80% of it LOL.

Braised Chicken Feet | ~Php140
We ordered chicken feet because we have been craving for Causeway’s chicken feet for the longest time. Tim Ho Wan’s were good, the meat was tasty and soft. However, I still prefer that of Causeway’s.

Congee | Php140
Their congee had lean pork, Century egg and salted egg. It was super good!!! Don’t be fooled by the seemingly plain appearance, it packs a lot of flavor. I especially love the salted egg bits in it. I would definitely order this again next time.

Beef Ball w/ Beancurd Skin | Php120
This was actually a wrong order. We originally wanted the Beancurd Skin Roll but I mistakenly ticked the wrong box LOL. With that being said, the beef balls were still appreciated. It tasted really meaty – no extenders. However, the cilantro taste was a tad too strong for my liking. This is just a personal preference though, I just don’t like cilantro that much.

Baked Bun w/ BBQ Pork | Php145
First of all, I feel like this dish is pretty cheap considering you get 3 pieces of pork buns per order. I have heard nothing but good things about Tim Ho Wan’s pork buns so I was really, really excited to taste them. They were served hot and the crust was oh so crunchy yet soft at the same time (if that is even possible). On first bite, I was in love. So I took a few more bites, then it hit me… It’s sweet. Too sweet. I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. The BBQ Pork filling was too sweet for me, again, a personal preference. But I loved the pastry shell. I imagine it would work well as a dessert if it was filled with custard or red beans.

Overall, I loved Tim Ho Wan’s food! I was a bit sad that I didn’t like the Pork Buns as much as I thought I would, but the Pork Ribs and Congee more than made up for it. I would definitely go back again, only if the lines are short enough LOL.

For my friend’s birthday celebration (a year ago LOL), she chose to have our dinner at Naci’s. Naci Comfort Food brings comfort food that’s simple while still robust and full of flavor. We’ve tried their desserts one other time but it was actually our first to try their meals.

First off, we each ordered their fruit shakes. They were rather fresh and refreshing (is this redundant?), but nothing worth writing home about. Their fruit shakes range from Php145 to Php175.

Their Triple Nachos (Php280) were such a hit. A combination of deep-fried flour tortillas, taro and corn chips served with Mexican beef and the freshest tomato salsa drizzled with cheese sauce and tangy sour cream. I couldn’t stop myself from popping one chip after another into my mouth. The chips, despite being deep-fried, were not oily at all so that’s a big plus.

The Yakimeshi Beef Rice Bowl (Php380) is a fusion of Japanese favorites. Sukiyaki beef, tofu and sauteed mixed vegetables topped over Japanese fried rice drizzled with teriyaki sauce. I honestly don’t remember a lot about this dish but I know that the beef slices were perfectly tender.

Their Grilled Mahi Mahi (Php380) had one thick fillet topped with dill cream and cherry tomatoes served with parsley rice and buttered vegetables. The fish was grilled perfectly – it did not come out dry. But oddly, my favorite part of this dish were the buttered veggies. They were fresh, crunchy and sweet, just the way I like my veggies to be.

Last that came out was the Milton’s Fried Chicken (Php450). Crispy fried chicken marinated in Naci’s secret spice blend and buttermilk served with mushroom gravy and tomato ketchup. The chicken pieces were huge and the batter was so deliciously crispy. To top it all off, the potato fries on the side was also yummy. I found myself eating the fries even if I already felt a little full. LOL glutton much?

Dinner was very good and we capped it all off with their Yema Cake which we got for the birthday girl. My favorites for the night were the fried chicken and nachos.

Sadly, Naci is no longer open in BGC (it has been replaced by Shingetsu) but I am hoping they open up again in another location.

This is my way of reminding myself of the little things that recently made me happy as inspired by Helga.

  1. 10 hours of sleep. We had to drive to Pangasinan after my 1pm-10pm shift to attend our friend’s dad’s wake. I was awake for more than 36 hours straight and I felt so drained. When I got home, I had 10 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Having more than 5 hours of sleep is already such a luxury for me.
  2. Our wi-fi router at home finally got fixed. We had a power interruption in the building during the heavy rains and our router somehow got busted. We had no wi-fi for 4 days and I had to make do with my mobile data while eternally being bugged that Globe might cap me off anytime and decrease my browsing speed. LOL #firstworldproblems
  3. People paying me up. Someone who owed me money finally paid up! She was 6 months delayed with her payment, grabe!  I hate lending money because I always feel awkward when I need to ask them to pay up. Ugh.
  4. My new powerbank. I need a powerbank for when I’m out and I use my mobile data. Turning on my mobile data sucks the life out of my phone. And I think it’s quite a steal at Phph795 only for 10050 mAh (whatever that means LOL.) Yay!
  5. Subway sandwiches. This is my go-to lunch for when I’m in a rush to get to work. It is very convenient and way healthier than other usual fastfood choices.
  6. Securing our accommodation in Bohol. Cris and I will be travelling to Bohol in 2 weeks and I finally decided where to stay. We already paid 50% of our bill therefore securing our desired beach-front room. Yay!
  7. Writing down a list of goals for August. I decided to be more productive and drafted a list of things I want to accomplish next month. Here’s to making this year a greater one than it already is.
  8. YouTube karaoke. I have been bugging my friends to go to a KTV restaurant and sing cheesy 90’s pop music but our schedules just does not sync up! Thanks to YouTube, I get to sing my lungs out (with accompaniment) while taking my shower. LOL
  9. Travel plans. I am cooking up a backpacking trip with a good friend whose birthday is just a few days earlier than mine. If we push through, it will be my birthday getaway even if I will already be back on my actual birthday LOL. Maipilit lang…
  10. Today’s Japanese lunch. It’s the third week in a row that my Friday lunchout is at a Japanese restaurant. And I love it! We tried out a new resto around the office area – TENYA – which serves bomb tempura bowls. If it isn’t obvious by now, I love Japanese food.

 

AKA another video of me stuffing my face with delicious food. LOL. This time, Cris and I ate at Pho Hoa in SM Megamall. I actually frequent Pho Hoa especially during the rainy days. It was a very rainy Sunday afternoon so we decided to have our early dinner there to help warm out tummies. Check out the video below.

It was a rainy Friday lunch and I was craving for soup so I convinced my usual lunchout companions to grab some ramen. I suggested one of my cheap favorites, Tampopo, but we were shocked to find it closed for renovation. Feeling beat down (LOL so dramatic), we started walking around the BHS area looking for a Japanese restaurant that was not so crowded. That’s when we found Shingetsu, right exactly where Naci used to be. Shingetsu is a fairly new restaurant around the area, maybe even barely 6 months old.

They have a pretty big menu but we zoned in on their Lunch Sets. Each set comes with a side salad, an appetizer , soup,  and fruits for dessert. During our visit, we had a pork side dish but I’m not sure if this changes from time to time. The side dish, salad and soup were all good. And the fruits – cantaloupe and ride mango – tasted fresh and sweet.

Raissa got the Chicken Karaage Set. If I’m not mistaken, this was around Php350. I didn’t get to taste this given that she only had 3 fried chicken fillet. She was able to finish it all but when I asked how it was, she said that it was a little too sour for her taste. It seems like the chicken might have been marinated in lemon (or calamansi) before frying.

Allan’s choice was the Fried Salmon Set. Deep-fried salmon jaw coated in salted egg sauce and served with a bowl of fried rice. First of all, look at the serving size! This could easily feed two people. I got to try his dish and I loved it! The salmon was perfectly fried, not too oily, and the salted egg sauce was very decadent. It lacked some acid so I drizzled it with calamansi juice and it came out even more delicious. And all that food only cost Php390. This was easily the winning dish of the day.

I went for the Katsu Curry Set which comes out at Php420. Mine was good as well. The katsu was fried perfectly and was not dry even if the pork slice was very lean and thick. It is sitting on top of a bed of Japanese curry with a couple of tender pork pieces in it. I like how the curry was mildly spiced but I would have loved it more if they threw in some vegetables in there.

Overall, it was a very satisfying lunch. The serving size was surprisingly big for the prize and all the extras that come with the lunch set made us feel like we were getting more that what we paid for. I would definitely go back to this restaurant and I will definitely get the Salmon Set next time.
