Last week, a good friend who works in Singapore was home for a short while. We decided to meet up for lunch before she heads back to SG. She requested for a restaurant that serves greens and I immediately thought of Sunnies Cafe. I have been seeing posts about this place on Instagram, and they appear to offer healthy and upscale dishes.
 


 

What we ordered:

Salmon Poke Quinoa | Php280 – spicy raw salmon, avocado, mixed greens, quinoa, pickled red onions, seaweed, citrus ponzu dressing. I loved the bits of spicy salmon mixed with the creamy avocado. I loved almost everything on the plate except for the purplish leaves which were a little too bitter for my taste.

Southern Style Fried Chicken Wings | Php290 – served with honey and homemade gravy. I love me some chicken but these ones I didn’t like. The meat had a funky taste to it – it was a bit malansa. In restrospect, I should have asked for lemon to balance out the funkiness but I guess we just couldn’t be bothered that time.

Spicy Pomodoro | Php270 – linguini, mixed seafood, white anchovies, lemon, parsley. This I loved! The spicy sauce contrasted so well with the salty anchovies and the lemon added that much needed kick to it. Serving was a bit stingy, though. In general, serving size could be something they can improve on so the customers feel that they are getting more value for their money.

For drinks we had Iced Mocha (Php170) and Mango Shake (Php165). I had the coffee and I liked how strong it was til the very last drop – it didn’t get watered down by the melted ice. I didn’t get to ask Lorraine how her mango shake was but she didn’t really have any complaints so I think it is safe to assume that it was OK.


 

Sunnies Cafe is a good place for catching up with friends with its high ceiling and Instagram-worthy interiors. Too bad I didn’t get to take photos to show the ambiance of the place because it was just so crowded during our visit. The speed of their service could be improved though, good thing Lorraine and I were too busy chitchatting that we didn’t mind the long-ish wait. That being said, I would still definitely go back to taste more of their food.

 

I don’t really cook fish that much but around a month ago, an office friend shared her blood type diet to me. It entailed eating a few servings of fish every week and salmon is one of the fish varieties allowed for my blood type. This led me to experimenting in the kitchen and I was surprised that it actually turned out good. Well, at least good enough for my first try.

SINIGANG NA SALMON BELLY

Ingredients:

  • Salmon belly strips
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 4 tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 bunch of kangkong, leaves and upper stalks
  • ½ bunch sitaw, cut to around 3inches long each
  • 2 green chili peppers
  • ½ pack “sinigang sa sampalok” mix
  • Cooking oil, for sautéing the onion and tomatoes
  • 6 pcs calamansi, juice only
  • Fish sauce (patis), to taste
  • Water of your desired amount

 

Cooking Instructions:

  1. Heat cooking oil in a saucepan and sauté sliced onion.
  2. When onion turns translucent, stir in the sliced tomatoes.
  3. When the flesh of the tomato begins to separate from the skin, add patis and water.
  4. When the water boils, add the salmon belly strips and simmer for around 5 minutes.
  5. Add the sitaw and green chili peppers. After around 2-3 minutes, put in the kang kong.
  6. Squeeze in the calamansi juice and adjust the taste to your liking.
  7. When the kang kong leaves start to wilt, turn off heat.
  8. Enjoy with a bowl of freshly steamed white rice! 🙂

 

PAUL Boulangerie and Patisserie has been around in France since the late 1880’s. After more than 100 years, Filipinos get to vicariously eat ~authentic French~ pastries without leaving the country, thanks to the local franchise brought in by THE Ben Chan.

Luckily, one of the newly opened franchise is very near my office building and on a Friday, my teammates and I decided to have our lunch at PAUL (Bench Tower). While waiting for our orders to be served, we were dished out a complimentary bread basket with butter and jam, and olive oil with balsamic vinegar. The bread was so good especially when dipped in the olive oil and balsamic vinegar mix.

Allan and I split an order of Cream of Asparagus Soup which is their “Soup of the Day” (Phph110). Despite splitting an order between us, I still felt like the serving was generous. It came with an equally delicious slice of bread. I loved it!

Below are what my friends ordered.

“Poulet Citron” (Php280) | An open sandwich topped with marinated chicken breast in lemon and garlic garnished with chopped parsley served warm with a side salad.

“Tartine Saumon Fume” (Php320) | An open sandwich topped with smoked salmon, cucumber and soft white cheese served cold with a side salad.

“Tartine Boeuf” (Php300) | An open sandwich topped with sauteed beef, onions, fresh mushrooms and leeks topped with melted cheddar cheese served warm with a side salad.

“Cuisse de Poulet Rotie” (Php340) | Roasted chicken leg with herbs, served with salad, sauteed potatoes and shallots.

This is my order and it was the last to arrive on the table. Our server kept telling me that they were making sure that my chicken is thoroughly cooked before they serve it to me. I didn’t mind because who likes salmonella, right? And when it finally got to my table, I have to say it was worth the long wait! The chicken was indeed cooked well and perfectly seasoned. I also loved the potatoes but for was missing the shallots (no biggie). I would most probably order this again when I go back to the restaurant.

Overall, my first meal at Paul Boulangerie was very satisfying. Given the similar price range, I prefer this way more than TWG. Just saying. 🙂

The street across Patong Beach is lined with establishments – bars, stores, hotels and restaurants. There are different types of bars around, from the usual backpacker’s watering hole to the eccentric A Go-Go Bars. As expected, a good number of lady-boys are walking around offering massages or whatever. Hehe.

On our second night in Phuket, we decided to walk the strip along Patong Beach. I was actually hoping to get a light buzz from one of the bars but my friends weren’t really up for it.

During our long walk, we came across a pink mobile bar. It was our first time to see one so you can just imagine our excitement, haha. It’s painted a very bold pink, decked with blazing lights and blaring out some Thai hip-hop music. It just demands attention. Weirdly enough, no one was around. Not even a single costumer.

Since it was decided that we will no longer drink, we resorted to taking part of Patong’s street food. From grilled meat and seafood, fresh fruits and utterly delicious (and cheap!) crepes – basically anything a night owl would crave for.

I feel like the huge amount of restaurants overwhelmed our hungry tummies because we actually ended up having our dinner at Subway. LOL. It’s quite comical, actually.

After filling our tummies with sandwich and street food, we walked back to our hotel to retire for the night. I hope to get back to Phuket someday and take part of the infamous Patong nightlife. For real, this time.

If there’s only one thing that I would want to eat every time I go home to the province, it would be none other than the infamous Ilocos Longganisa. Nothing makes me feel like home more than those little nuggets of garlicky-porky goodness. The mother recently gave me a bunch and I took advantage of the rare abundance of a taste from home. I played around in the kitchen and came up with this a rather enjoyable dish.

 

PASTA AGLIO OLIO WITH ILOCOS LONGGANISA

Ingredients:

  • Pasta, around 150 grams
  • Salt and Cooking Oil (for boiling pasta)
  • Ilocos Garlic Longganisa, 3 links, precooked and sliced thinly
  • Olive Oil and a little butter for frying
  • 3-4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • Fresh Basil leaves, 1 bunch, roughly chopped
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Juice of half a small lemon
  • Dried  Chili Flakes, as much as you prefer
  • Grated Cheddar Cheese, 1 tbsp
  • Parmesan Cheese, for topping

Cooking Instructions: 

  1. Cook pasta per package instructions.You may use whatever pasta you like – I had leftover wheat fusilli so used that.
  2. Boil a pot of water, put a few drops of oil and salt liberally. Boil pasta until al dente, depending on which pasta you’re using. Mine took around 8-10 minutes.
  3. When the pasta is al dente, turn off heat and drain. Run under cold water to prevent soggy pasta stop the cooking process then set aside.
  4. In a pan, heat around a tablespoon of Virgin Olive Oil and a little butter.
  5. When the butter starts to melt, put in sliced garlic and stir around until they turn slightly brown. Make sure your garlic does not burn.
  6. Put in the Ilocos Longganisa. I was using the precooked ones so it didn’t need a lot of time in the pan. If you’re using the fresh kind, just make sure they are thoroughly cooked before adding in your pasta.
  7. I like my food spicy so I added a sprinkle of dried chili peppers at this point.
  8. Put in your cooked pasta. Toss around so it is properly coated with oil and the sausage slices are properly distributed all throughout the pan.
  9. Season with salt and ground pepper to taste.
  10. I had some cheddar cheese in the fridge so I grated it and put it in as well, but this is totally optional.
  11. Squeeze half of a small lemon in. This adds a bit of freshness into the dish.
  12. Turn off heat, throw in your fresh basil and stir to let the leftover heat wilt the basil leaves.
  13. Finally, top with Parmesan cheese and a sprig of basil for garnish.

The other day, I was talking to my friends and telling them how amazed I am that January is already gone (upon writing, it’s already the 4th of February). And they all go “What? January was soooo slow! It felt like forever!”. I honestly feel the complete opposite, this month just zoomed by so quick. So clearly, time is indeed relative. Anyway… on to my weekly recap.

January 22: It was a busy, busy day. I had an early start and prepared my packed lunch. Today’s menu was chicken adobo (which turned out yummy, can I just say hehe). Meetings re: Kammerchor February performances were done today and boy, February looks like a busy month! Then my teammate told me about Chips Ahoy! with Reese’s and I just gad to go to S&R and buy a pack. Peanut butter is my weakness.

Had our first running session of the year headed by our personal coach, Allan. He blogs about running at http://www.runfreemanila.com (Go check him out!) Post-workout meal was at Pasta Roni. Yummy and filling food that actually tastes and feels healthy. Well, healthy if you avoid all the cream-based goodness.

January 23: Speaking of peanut butter being my weakness, my teammate pulled out this butter flavored peanut butter. Didn’t taste very different from the usual PB but it was still good. Has dinner at Breakfast in Bed and had the saddest Eggs Benedict I’ve ever had in my lifetime. LOL. Tried to down it with beer but realized I don’t like alcohol that much anymore so I switched to my usual mug of brewed coffee.

January 24: I am so proud of myself because I managed to get out of bed early to prepare my packed lunch of fried chicken and sautéed veggies. Took a break from work to chill at Luna Café, one of the newest chill spot at BGC. I had their longganisa pandesal which was really really good but a tad bit expensive at P160 a pop. Met up with Lorraine and we walked all the way to SM Aura. It was actually my first time there and they have interesting albeit expensive food choices.

January 25: Slept over (Friday night) at CGS ‘coz we stayed up too late watching The Book Thief. Woke up early to prepare breakfast: fried rice, scrambled eggs and tuyo. Yummmmmm! Trooped all the way to Trinoma because K needed to run some errands. Late lunch at Oki Oki where I had my usual Crab Omelette Ramen. A very odd topping for a ramen but it works for me, haha.

January 26: Stayed home all day. Lately, Sundays has been stay-at-home-days. Come lunchtime, I decided to pe a pig and ate ice cream with my Chips Ahoy! cookies. BAD MOVE! I had to cancel my date with Timmy because I didn’t feel so good after pigging out on sweets.

January 27: Yesterday’s mistakes are today’s regrets. LOL. The icecream-cookie combo yesterday now officially made me sick. I’ve been sniffing and hacking all day, eeeeewwwww! My voice was also cracking so I had sick people’s food: noodles, orange juice and tea.

January 28: Had lunch at Relik as part of our monthly team fostering. I had the Grilled Pork Belly with Salsa Verde and it was so good. The java rice was a little too oily for my taste so I didn’t finish it all. We also ordered Chorisig (Chorizo sisig) for sharing and it was also very good. Tasty and spicy, just the way I like it. For dessert, we had cinnamon churros with caramel sauce for dipping.

After work, I met up with Lorraine and Ren. Finally, Inday’s New Year’s dinner! We had dinner at Kichitora, and my ramen was sooooo good! I especially loved my egg with melty yolk. We moved to Starbucks after filling up on the Japanese goodness and we talked and gossiped and caught up like crazy. Here’s to hoping for more dinner dates this year! 🙂
