It was a rainy Friday lunch and I was craving for soup so I convinced my usual lunchout companions to grab some ramen. I suggested one of my cheap favorites, Tampopo, but we were shocked to find it closed for renovation. Feeling beat down (LOL so dramatic), we started walking around the BHS area looking for a Japanese restaurant that was not so crowded. That’s when we found Shingetsu, right exactly where Naci used to be. Shingetsu is a fairly new restaurant around the area, maybe even barely 6 months old.

They have a pretty big menu but we zoned in on their Lunch Sets. Each set comes with a side salad, an appetizer , soup,  and fruits for dessert. During our visit, we had a pork side dish but I’m not sure if this changes from time to time. The side dish, salad and soup were all good. And the fruits – cantaloupe and ride mango – tasted fresh and sweet.

Raissa got the Chicken Karaage Set. If I’m not mistaken, this was around Php350. I didn’t get to taste this given that she only had 3 fried chicken fillet. She was able to finish it all but when I asked how it was, she said that it was a little too sour for her taste. It seems like the chicken might have been marinated in lemon (or calamansi) before frying.

Allan’s choice was the Fried Salmon Set. Deep-fried salmon jaw coated in salted egg sauce and served with a bowl of fried rice. First of all, look at the serving size! This could easily feed two people. I got to try his dish and I loved it! The salmon was perfectly fried, not too oily, and the salted egg sauce was very decadent. It lacked some acid so I drizzled it with calamansi juice and it came out even more delicious. And all that food only cost Php390. This was easily the winning dish of the day.

I went for the Katsu Curry Set which comes out at Php420. Mine was good as well. The katsu was fried perfectly and was not dry even if the pork slice was very lean and thick. It is sitting on top of a bed of Japanese curry with a couple of tender pork pieces in it. I like how the curry was mildly spiced but I would have loved it more if they threw in some vegetables in there.

Overall, it was a very satisfying lunch. The serving size was surprisingly big for the prize and all the extras that come with the lunch set made us feel like we were getting more that what we paid for. I would definitely go back to this restaurant and I will definitely get the Salmon Set next time.

 

 

This is my way of reminding myself of the little things that recently made me happy as inspired by Helga.

  1. Store Sales. Cris and I took a trip to the mall to buy his suit for my friends’ wedding and we saw a lot of stores having their End of Season Sales. I took advantage and scored good deals from H&M and Cotton On.
  2. Grabtaxi/ Grabcar promos. For someone like me who takes a cab everyday to work, the emergence of Grabtaxi and other transport services has brought so much convenience. Add to that the “no booking fee” and “Php50 off” promos, I will never endure standing under the sun just to flag a cab ever again. Or at least until their promos last.
  3. Rainy days. I know the rain was brought in by typhoons and typhoons are usually bad new for our country but I just can’t help but love it. It’s such a relief to go to bed at night not worrying about waking up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat.
  4. Speaking of rainy days, one of my favorite things to do in the cold weather is to drink hot soup. Or consume any food with soup in it, for that matter. We had pho for dinner last Sunday and it left my insides so pleasantly warm.
  5. With all this rain, I can’t get away with my “will just use my cardigan/scarf as umbrella” anymore. For some reason, I just don’t like using umbrellas. But Cris gave me a cute transparent umbrella from Japan, and he does not need to force me to bring it with me because I love using it. LOL. Obviously, I’m not that hard to please.
  6. My oven! I’ve been trying to use my new oven more often so I can get familiarized with it before I finally try to bake some pastries. I’ve only cooked a few dishes with it so far – 2 chicken recipes and roasted liempo. And one night when I was feeling more adventurous, I made pizza! Haaaay… How to eat and not end up just looking like a blubber all year round???
  7. Weddings. I attended a wedding yesterday and I loved every moment of it. It was also nice to see the bride who is a very good friend of mine. We used to share a condo before but she moved to Australia for her job a couple of years ago so we barely see each other now.
  8. My GLOBE friends. This is the group I stuck with from my first job and we’ve remained friends even after leaving the company. We fondly call our group “Brothers and Sisters” which is very apt since we actually consider each other as brothers and sisters.
  9. Cookie Cup. After the wedding reception last night, the Brothers and Sisters (B & S) braved Marikina’s traffic and semi-flooded streets to have coffee and spend more time together. This café (Cookie Mug) has the unique idea of serving drinks in cups made of cookie. I like the novelty of pouring in your drink and melting the chocolate coating of the cup, and eating the actual “cookie cup” when you’re done with your drink. Pretty cool concept.
  10. Today’s lunch of katsu curry. My usual Friday lunchout group tried out a fairly new restaurant in our area – Shingetsu. We all ordered their lunch set which comes with appetizer, soup, salad, dessert and your choice of mains. The food is delicious and the serving size is huge. I would definitely go back there again.

I have been extremely busy these past few weeks hence the unintentional hiatus. Work was crazy due to movements in the team and the little downtime I had, I chose to spend on catching up on sleep. I wasn’t THAT physically tired but it sure felt like my brain was FRIED. But anyway, I am trying to slowly get back on track with the blog. I am currently stuck at home with a slight fever and an upset stomach so this post serves as a good distraction. So here is the week’s list.

  1. Cris and I very rarely go to malls (I tend to avoid malls because PEOPLE, ’nuff said) so I was quite adamant when he said he wanted to have our date-night at SM Megamall. I gave in and we had a lovely dinner at a curry house. Then he dragged me to the appliance store and bought me an oven! I have always wanted one but keep putting off buying one for no apparent reason and now he finally did it for me. Brownie points for the man! 🙂
  2. I love eating out and trying out new restaurants. This weekend, Cris and I got to try out the food at Eri Curry and decided to film our meal.I started a ~web series~ on my YouTube channel and named it Dead Hungry, which directly and aptly translates to Patay Gutom LOL. If you’re keen on watching us stuff our faces with delicious curry, I’d appreciate it if you watch the video below.

  1. Some friends decided to come over to our condo unit and cooked up a feast for us.We had buttered garlic shrimp, halaan soup, buttered veggies and fried whole fish. YUM!
  2. To commemorate June as PRIDE Month, we staged a mini-concert at work featuring employee talents and a ~celebrity guest~. We invited over Rita from The Voice Philippines and she was great. My group also performed two songs that show support to the LGBT community. 
  3. Free food! My team won around Php10K from another event and we decided to celebrate by ordering lunch for everyone. Free food is always good LOL.
  4. It’s time for our Midyear Performance Evaluation and I am so glad to hear good feedback from both my supervisor and manager. I have been working my butt off extra hard this year and it just feels good to be validated.
  5. Finding girlfriends who share your opinions and beliefs.Whether it be towards social media, money, relationships, work or whatever.
  6. A friend from work recently went to Boracay and I am so happy he obliged to buy mea box of Calamansi Muffins from Real Coffee. I have been having it for breakfast with a cup of coffee and  it just starts my day off at the right note.
  7. My company provides car service to employees who leave work after 10pm. I always work way past the time and it’s just so nice to not worry about getting home safe and sound. Not to mention the savings I incur. I swear, cab money has been burning a hole in my pocket.
  8. I finally watched the finale of iZombie 1! I love it and I can’t wait for the next season to start.

 

Tampopo is a fairly new franchise that combines both ramen and tonkatsu in their menu. This is a rather interesting twist as we are used to having restaurants that specialize in just tonkatsu or just ramen only.

They have quite an extensive menu because they actually offer two types of ramen – Hokkaido and Kyushu. Hokkaido has thick and chewy noodles while Kyushu has noodles that are thin and hard. They also have a selection of additional toppings if you are keen.

They offer a choice of getting “normal” Premium US Pork or the Top Grade Black Pig for your katsu. The Black Pig has higher fat content, so I assume it is tastier and more tender than the leaner variety.

Each table has condiments available – togarashi, chili oil, cabbage salad dressing and tonkatsu sauce. As with Yabu, they let you grind the sesame for your dipping sauce when you order a katsu. I noticed though that Yabu’s sesame sauce is more fragrant than Tampopo’s.

Before I proceed to the food though, let me show you a photo of the usual Friday lunch-out gang. We all work under one team but Nerisse already left the company so it’s just the three of us now (Allan, Alen and me).

Alen was meeting her boyfriend for lunch that day so she just got the Potato Salad (Php120) as an appetizer. I had a little taste and I must say that it was quite tasty. The potato was creamy and not at all grainy, and I love the apparent taste of onion.

Both Allan and Nerisse got the Tampopo Deluxe Black Pig Shabu Ramen (Php420). They asked the chili to be served on-the-side as they don’t take spice that well. I read somewhere that the broth has been simmered for two days, wow! Allan finished up all the noodles but still had lots of broth left in his bowl. Hmmmmm…

I had the Tampopo Premium Tonkatsu Ramen (Phph380) and I was quite impressed with the serving size. This is the perfect dish when you just can’t decide whether to indulge on ramen or katsu, best of both worlds! The milky broth had the perfect heat in it, spiced just right.

The pork is very lean but it was not dry. The breading was fine and crisp, I heard they use a special Hokkaido bread crumb to coat their meats.

I didn’t get to finish my bowl of ramen as the serving was really generous. I was quite impressed with Tampopo’s food that I requested a repeat visit a few weeks later. The food is delicious and it’s relatively cheap compared to other ramen and katsu places. Definitely a bang for your buck! 🙂

My friends and I recently took a trip to UP area to eat our way through Maginhawa Street in UP Village. It was mainly for Gian’s sake as he has never been there, considering he really likes to eat. Oh the travesty! LOL. I also had my selfish motives as I haven’t been to UP in such a loooong time and I wanted to finally take a picture with The Oblation.

We were all coming from Boni (Boni Crew represent! LOL) so the best way for us was to take the MRT then hail a cab when we go down Quezon Avenue station. Obligatory photo-op while waiting for the train (and a very late Gian!!!). It’s also been a long time since I took the MRT.

The night before while we were out having dinner, we each chose one restaurant that we wanted to visit. So in the end, we will get to eat at four places. Sounds like a plan, eh? Our first stop was CRAZY KATSU.

I’ve been hearing praises about this place. They say the food is good for the price you pay. Some say it could even rival the infamous Yabu’s katsu. Unfortunately, I have no point of comparison as I’ve never tried Yabu up to this day. Not even once. FML

The place looked quite unassuming from the outside. When we got in, we were seated at one corner of the room. On the wall were pictures of their dishes which made it easier for us to order. The place was pretty small, cramped with tables and chairs. They really maximized the space they have. It is certainly not a place for intimate and TMI conversations (looking at you neighboring table with loud girls talking about family gossip like they’re the only two people in the room LOL).

We imposed a rule to not get the same thing in order for us to get to taste each other’s food hehe. Before seeing the pictures, I was dead set on getting their bestseller, whatever it would be. But when I scanned the photos on the wall, I just couldn’t help myself from getting the Katsu Curry.

It came with three slices of pork katsu swimming in a pool of delicious Japanese curry. There were also bits of pork in the sauce along with the usual suspects: carrots and potatoes. It was very good but I just couldn’t finish my plate. I would suggest you order this if you’re really hungry. You can always order extra rice to sop up all the curry sauce (if you’re really THAT hungry).

This bowl of Pork Katsudon wasn’t impressive. It was OK but not impressive. Very much forgettable. Vlad finished the whole bowl tho, hehe.

Gian’s Pork Tonkatsu was better than the Katsudon. The serving was very generous, as you can see. However, it needed a lot of help from the mayonnaise and the Tonkatsu sauce it came with. I even warned him to not pour the whole thing in ‘coz I was afraid it might be too salty (sauces served on the side are usually very rich in flavor). He ended up dumping all of the sauce in, and squeezing a lot more mayo onto the meat.

Now here comes the winner of the day. Crazy Katsu’s Chicken Katsu. I was informed this is their bestseller. Crispy fried chicken fillet on top of a bed of shredded cabbage sitting atop some magic sauce which was very delicious it could only be Jesus’ jizz LOL. Blasphemy aside, the sauce was really really really good!

Crazy Katsu was a very good start to our food trip. I would love to go back to try their other dishes and maybe get a plateful of Chicken Katsu all to myself. I’ve heard their gyoza was also good so maybe I will try that, too.
