This is my way of reminding myself of the little things that recently made me happy as inspired by Helga.

 

Here are the things that made me happy this week:

  1. Canceled choir rehearsals. As much as I love singing with my choir, my work schedule this week makes it impossible to accommodate rehearsal time. Cancelling them means I will not miss much and I have less stuff to catch up on.
  2. DIMSUM! Specifically Lugang’s Pork Xiao Long Bao. I availed of Lugang’s Feast All You Can promo and feast I did! I am literally drooling as I type this because everything was so good I ate til I couldn’t IYKWIM.
  3. Finally finished editing and uploading my video montage during our weekend camping trip to Pagbilao, Quezon. I have been working on it for two weeks and midway, Adobe Premiere Pro decided to act up. I had to start from scratch but I am glad I got it all done and over with.
  4. The almost daily rain episodes. The heat is just so unbearable these days and I am so happy that it has been raining almost every day this week. God knows we ll need the momentary reprieve.
  5. iZombie! A good number of bloggers I religiously read have been mentioning how hooked they are to iZombie. I finally gave it a go and boy, am I entertained! So far, I am loving it.
  6. I finally jumped the gun and had a haircut. My hair just feels so healthy and light. And with the new (shorter) length, I was able to style it everyday this week.
  7. SPAM musubi! I have sheets after sheets of nori about to go bad – an S&R impulse buy. I was frying up some SPAM and realized I could probably turn it into a musubi. I only had brown rice but it still turned out so good.
  8. Earlier this week, I woke up with a painful knot on my back maybe due to my weird sleeping position. It hurt so bad and it makes me so uncomfortable but Cris had been giving me back massage for two consecutive nights now. WIN!
  9. Trivia Crack. It’s my newly-installed game I have been playing all day. It’s just so fun to answer random trivia and participate in friendly competition with friends.
  10. I am still surprisingly full from my bibimbap lunch at Seoul Express. Nothing exceptional about the food but for some reason, I was so content with it.

I love Japanese food! If I could only eat from one cuisine for the rest of my life, I would instantly choose Japanese over all other cuisines without batting an eyelash.

Oki Oki is one of the more underrated Japanese restaurants in the country. For some reason, I’ve never paid much attention to it until one time when I was at the mall with a fellow Ilocano and we just could not stop laughing about the resto’s name. For your appreciation of the joke, Oki is an Ilocano term for a lady’s intimate part. LOL. Anyway, since that first try, I have gone back to the restaurant multiple times. Below are our orders the last time Cris and I dined there (which was actually his first time.)

Mango Kani Maki | Phph200
8 huge rolls of ripe mango, nori, and kani (crab meat) rolled in roe. The mango tasted fresh and I love how there is not so much rice in each roll. I hate it when there is so much rice that you could barely taste the actual filling. Oki Oki’s Mango Kani Maki has the perfect amount of rice and filling for my taste.

Oki Oki Chicken Teriyaki Don | Phph200
Grilled boneless chicken with teriyaki sauce topped on a bowl of rice. This was Cris’ order but I was able to take a bite of the chicken and I loved it. It was moist and had a smoky taste that perfectly balanced the sweet teriyaki sauce. Cris loved it so much that when he ate with his friends on a separate instance, he ordered exactly the same thing.

Tenshin Ramen | Php180
Crabmeat omelette topped on egg noodles with thick soup. This is my favorite item in their menu and I never miss to order it every.freaking.time! It may sound weird to have an omelette in a “ramen” but it works for me. I love peppering it with togarashi or Japanese chili powder for an added heat. Plus the serving size is good for two for such a cheap price. I love it!

Mr. Choi Kitchen is one of my favorite lunch out/ dinner spots when I was still working with Globe Telecom. One of their branches is located in Robinson’s Forum, a short walking distance from both my previous office and condo. Due to its accessibility, it is my default go-to restaurant every time I have them Chinese munchies. Below are all the food we ordered when I last ate there with three other friends.

Spinach Seafood Soup (Php90) | For starters, we had their spinach soup. Perfectly warm and light, best way to start out our meal. It had bits of shrimp, fish and tofu so it’s very tasty as well.

Beef Brisket and Wanton Noodle Soup (Php195) | Because I wanted more soup (I always want more soup!), I requested that we get an order of noodle soup. I liked the beef because it was tender and had the perfect amount of fat that I like (which is not too much). The wanton was OK as well but the noodles tasted a bit plastic-y for me. It was fine anyway because I was just after the soup originally.

Baked Roast Duck in White Sauce with Rice (Php250) | I always opt for Chao Fan when I dine here but my companions already ordered before I got there so I had to settle with their choice. It turned out very delicious! It had a generous amount of the roast duck and white sauce. I especially loved the burnt parts of the sauce because it added a smoky taste to the rice. This is actually good as a dish in itself because as I said, the amount of roast duck in it is very generous.

Crispy Fried Chicken (Php290) | Half of a whole chicken crispy fried to perfection with crackers – another regular in any Chinese meal. I always eat it with a dipping sauce of calamansi juice, chili garlic paste and soy sauce. Yum!

Beef with Broccoli (Php290) | Another regular is the beef with broccoli. The slices of beef were again perfectly tender. I just wish there’s much more broccoli thrown in there.

Mr. Choi Dimsum Combination (Php305) |  It is blasphemous to dine in a Chinese restaurant and not order any type of dimsum. We take it up a notch higher by ordering a platter of varied dimsums to satisfy the equally varied cravings. I always zoom in first on the hakaw (shrimp dumpling) and go to the nori wrapped siu mai next. The rest are good as well, but these two are on the top of my list.

The Indays’ schedule finally synched together so we had time for a proper catchup dinner. We were meeting up in Makati and I was coming from the ~province~ of BGC so I gave them the liberty to choose where to eat. Thankfully they chose Kichitora. If you know me well enough, you’d know I’m always down for a bowl of ramen.

Gyoza (P150) | For our appetizer, we got an order of pan-fried gyoza. It was OK, but the wrap was a tad bit too thick and chewy. It also wasn’t much of an appetizer because they served it almost simultaneous with our main meals therefore we didn’t get to finish it all up. That being said, it is still a good side dish to your ramen.

Pork Chashu Rice (P320) | Unlike me, Ren is not much of a ramen fan. She got a bowl of Japanese rice topped with grilled pork chashu chops, dried seaweed and molten lava egg. Just looking at that melty yolk makes me drool! This is also available in a smaller size at P175.

Paitan Chicken Ramen (P360) | Lorraine went for the Paitan Ramen. It is topped with your choice of chicken or pork (she chose chicken), bamboo shoots, green veggies and a slice of naruto. This ramen is made with their original white broth.

Paitan Ramen Zenbu no Se (P420) | I went for their best seller. Topped with pork chashu, dried seaweed (which I am addicted to), molten lava egg, naruto and drizzled with a dash of fried garlic oil. I opted for the regular broth though I saw in their menu that they also have a spicy variant. Guess I was kinda scared it was going to be too spicy and the restaurant was not too well ventilated;I wasn’t in the mood for sweat lol. It was good! I would probably get a bowl of this again when I go back but maybe get the smaller bowl at P300 because this was a little too hard for me to finish.

I definitely would go back to Kichitora. Maybe I’ll try their kara-age next time in place of the gyoza and stop being a puss and order the spicy ramen. It was a good dinner made better with great company (Naaaaaks!)
