Fely J’s Kitchen is a Filipino restaurant that specializes in Kapampangan food. It is part of the very popular LJC group of restaurants along with ABE, Lorenzo’s Way, Café Adriatico and Café Havana. After watching Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in the very cold Uptown Mall Cinema last weekend, I was craving for hot soup to warm me up. After a lot o wandering around, we ended up at Fely J’s mainly because the restaurant wasn’t as crowded as others and also because they have liempo, LOL.

Upon taking our order, they served us complimentary kropek which we munched on while waiting for our food to arrive. It came in this very pretty native bowl which I wanted to take home haha!

In an attempt to be ~healthy~, I ordered Ensalada ni Nanay (Php165). It came with slices of green mango, tomatoes, onions, salted egg, okra and eggplant. The sautéed bagoong was good – a little bit sweet and not too salty.

For our rice, we got the Fely J’s Dilis-cious Rice (Php225). It’s your regular steamed rice topped with deep-fried dilis and taosi and what I think might be fried shallots or onions. Honestly, the toppings were almost like ulam already but I loved how delicately flavored the crispy toppings were that they did not overpower the steamed rice.

Of course we got sinigang. This is the Fely J’s Pork Rib Sinigang (Php395). You have a choice between guava and tamarind broth. I’ve tried guava sinigang before and I didn’t like it so I opted for the classic tamarind. I like how they used pork rib so the meat wasn’t too fatty. Given that the pork was a bit on the leaner side, I was surprised to learn that they still managed to make it soft and tender. I loved dipping the meat into my patis-sili dipping sauce.

Last but not the least is the love of my life, Pork Liempo (Php225). If you know me well enough, you would know that I love LOVE liempo. Fely J’s version could be more tastier but it’s nothing a good toyo-mansi dipping sauce can’t remedy. 

Fely J’s Kitchen was surprisingly good. Not being much of a rice lover, it is a surprise that my favorite that night was the Dilis Rice. I could have the rice and the soup of the sinigang alone and I would honestly be a happy camper.

Luna Specialty Coffee is an all-day Filipino breakfast café partly owned by Lito Cayetano. Because I hate monotony, I am always on the lookout for new restaurants and cafes where my friends and I could eat at.

One weekday afternoon, we took a quick break from work and decided to try this new place out. We were experiencing the usual afternoon slump and we all needed a perk-me-upper.

They have a good selection of coffee – both hot and cold. To be honest, their cold coffees look more interesting but I try to shy away from cold and sweet beverages because I tend to develop a sore throat very easily.

Key Kalamansi Pie | Phph140
This is a local version of the more American dessert Key Lime Pie. It was pleasantly tart and the crushed graham on top gave a hint of sweetness. I would never order this if I am dining by myself because I am not very keen on sour desserts, but I reckon this would be good for sharing especially since the serving is quite generous.

Tapa and Egg Pan De Sal | Php230
Flat pan de sal with aioli, angus tapa and soft-boiled egg. I felt like this was priced rather steeply for the serving size. However, my friend who ordered this seemed very satisfied so I guess it’s all worth it, eh? And just look at that golden, melty yolk. Yummmm!

White Rabbit Candyccino | Php 140
This somehow tasted like Starbucks’ Caramel Frappuccino. I am not really a fan because I felt like it was too sweet for me, but for novelty of having the old school White Rabbit in your coffee, I think this is worth a try just for the heck of it.

Flat Tops Candyccino | Phph140
It’s like the White Rabbit Candyccino but instead of the White Rabbit Candy, it is infused with another Pinoy novelty chocolate – Flat Tops. Now this one resembled Starbucks’ Mocha Frappuccino.

Mochaccino | Php190
This was my order and it came with 3 pieces of assorted hopia, another traditional Filipino snack. It was served in a (very) wide-mouthed French coffee bowl. It is said that the coffee bowls are originally designed to keep the hands of the coffee drinker warm during the cold months in Europe. However, I don’t think this suits me because I tend to drink my coffee in a leisurely manner, so I would want a cup that could keep my drink warm as long as possible. The coffee itself was good, but pairing it with the hopia made it a little more special. It’s a surprisingly good combination and I was able to finish everything on my plate (or cup for that matter).

Overall, I enjoyed my first time dining at Luna. I have gone back to the café a couple of times since this first visit and I always leave with a content stomach.

Luna Specialty Coffee is located at the Ground Floor or NAC Tower along 32nd Street in BGC.

My friends and I took a long time deciding where to go for lunch during our Luneta/ Intramuros escapade. We wanted to eat somewhere with a great ambiance so we searched online for restaurant recommendations. We actually chose a different restaurant (it’s name escapes me as of writing) but it was closed down for the day. We wandered around the area and found the very inviting façade of Barbara’s.

They have a buffet lunch offering at Php545 per head. My companions were getting hungry and the pressure of the midday sun bearing down on us made the decision-making quick, despite the slight deviance from our original budget.

We were led upstairs to their dining area. I was quite impressed of how cozy and warm the interior is. It reminds me of old Spanish style homes in the province with its wooden floors and sliding windows.

The whole room was bathed in the warm glow emanating from a number of chandeliers hanging above our heads. It probably was a slow day for them because aside from ours, only two other tables were filled. The absence of a big crowd made the restaurant more ambient as we could only hear occasional boisterous laughter from the other patrons and a slight clitter-clatter coming from the kitchen.

On to the food…

Their spread was quite limited. With that, I can still say that it is still worth the price. For me, it is quality over quantity.

For appetizers, I had a bit of Waldorf Salad and Pita chips with Hummus dip. I liked the hummus a lot! I kept prodding my friends to try it out, LOL. I also had a few spoonfuls of Sweet Potato Soup, but it was too sweet for my taste.

For mains – I sampled the Buttered Baguio Vegetables, Paella, and Grilled Fish with Garlic Sauce. The paella was really good – the shrimp looked (and tasted!) fresh.

I liked the fish so much, I went back to the buffet table for another slice LOL. I also got a few slices of Roast Beef (best paired with the Cheesy Mashed Potato) and the very fresh tasting Lemon Peppered Chicken with Mango Salsa. The salsa must have been a favorite among the diners because the bowl was already scraped clean when I got some. I simply requested for the servers to top it up and they immediately took out a heaping bowl from the kitchen.

Their desserts were not so impressive, I must say. I tried their Brazo de Mercedes (meh), Brownies (meh), Banana Sesame (meh), and Coffee Jelly (yums!).

I realize I did not eat much, considering it was buffet dining. Maybe I will go back when my tummy is up for some pigging out. I was just not the usual buffet mood that day so my friends were teasing me that I did not get the bang for my buck. It’s all good, I’ll be back for revenge. Hahaha!
