Last week, a good friend who works in Singapore was home for a short while. We decided to meet up for lunch before she heads back to SG. She requested for a restaurant that serves greens and I immediately thought of Sunnies Cafe. I have been seeing posts about this place on Instagram, and they appear to offer healthy and upscale dishes.
 


 

What we ordered:

Salmon Poke Quinoa | Php280 – spicy raw salmon, avocado, mixed greens, quinoa, pickled red onions, seaweed, citrus ponzu dressing. I loved the bits of spicy salmon mixed with the creamy avocado. I loved almost everything on the plate except for the purplish leaves which were a little too bitter for my taste.

Southern Style Fried Chicken Wings | Php290 – served with honey and homemade gravy. I love me some chicken but these ones I didn’t like. The meat had a funky taste to it – it was a bit malansa. In restrospect, I should have asked for lemon to balance out the funkiness but I guess we just couldn’t be bothered that time.

Spicy Pomodoro | Php270 – linguini, mixed seafood, white anchovies, lemon, parsley. This I loved! The spicy sauce contrasted so well with the salty anchovies and the lemon added that much needed kick to it. Serving was a bit stingy, though. In general, serving size could be something they can improve on so the customers feel that they are getting more value for their money.

For drinks we had Iced Mocha (Php170) and Mango Shake (Php165). I had the coffee and I liked how strong it was til the very last drop – it didn’t get watered down by the melted ice. I didn’t get to ask Lorraine how her mango shake was but she didn’t really have any complaints so I think it is safe to assume that it was OK.


 

Sunnies Cafe is a good place for catching up with friends with its high ceiling and Instagram-worthy interiors. Too bad I didn’t get to take photos to show the ambiance of the place because it was just so crowded during our visit. The speed of their service could be improved though, good thing Lorraine and I were too busy chitchatting that we didn’t mind the long-ish wait. That being said, I would still definitely go back to taste more of their food.

 

I KNOW. I neglected this blog for a very long time. You see, last year was all kinds of shitty and it literally felt like a shithole. I don’t even want to talk about it with the mindset that if I avoid talking about 2016’s struggles, I can pretend that they actually didn’t happen. Instead, I will try my best to inject more positivity in my life by doing more of the things I love to do (i.e., eating and traveling). So here’s a food post for ya!

I love Japanese food so much! If I could have it everyday, I would. Sadly, Japanese food is more often a little on the pricey side here in the Philippines. Watami is one of the few places that offers good food at a reasonable price point. Read on to see what we got on our most recent visit.

Spicy Salmon Tempura | P245 – The ratio of shredded spicy salmon to rice was perfect. The slices are just right as one biters and I couldn’t stop popping them into my mouth.

Beef Pepper Rice | P195 – This reminded me so much of Pepper Lunch. It is served in a stone pot which worked well in keeping the rice hot. The beef was served raw but it cooked as the server mixed it all up in the pot. My favorite were the rice that stuck to the bottom which turned crispy. Yum!

Grilled Ahi | P145 – The fish was grilled perfectly; it was still moist and juicy and quite tasty. I wish the fish was a bit bigger but I guess that’s just me being my usual matakaw self LOL.

Creative Assorted Skewers | P225 – We couldn’t decide which of the yakitori offerings we wanted to order so we got a combination platter instead. It came with one skewer each of Chicken Liver (P55), Pork Enoki (P75), Chicken Thigh (P55), Roasted Beef & Spring Onion Roll (P95), and Chicken Wing (P55). My favorite were the enoki mushrooms wrapped in pork/bacon. They were just a delight to munch on!

 

I honestly could have eaten more but we were to watch a movie with unlimited popcorn and drinks right after lunch so I wanted to save some space in my tummy. That being said, I would gladly eat at Watami again and again.

It was a rainy Friday lunch and I was craving for soup so I convinced my usual lunchout companions to grab some ramen. I suggested one of my cheap favorites, Tampopo, but we were shocked to find it closed for renovation. Feeling beat down (LOL so dramatic), we started walking around the BHS area looking for a Japanese restaurant that was not so crowded. That’s when we found Shingetsu, right exactly where Naci used to be. Shingetsu is a fairly new restaurant around the area, maybe even barely 6 months old.

They have a pretty big menu but we zoned in on their Lunch Sets. Each set comes with a side salad, an appetizer , soup,  and fruits for dessert. During our visit, we had a pork side dish but I’m not sure if this changes from time to time. The side dish, salad and soup were all good. And the fruits – cantaloupe and ride mango – tasted fresh and sweet.

Raissa got the Chicken Karaage Set. If I’m not mistaken, this was around Php350. I didn’t get to taste this given that she only had 3 fried chicken fillet. She was able to finish it all but when I asked how it was, she said that it was a little too sour for her taste. It seems like the chicken might have been marinated in lemon (or calamansi) before frying.

Allan’s choice was the Fried Salmon Set. Deep-fried salmon jaw coated in salted egg sauce and served with a bowl of fried rice. First of all, look at the serving size! This could easily feed two people. I got to try his dish and I loved it! The salmon was perfectly fried, not too oily, and the salted egg sauce was very decadent. It lacked some acid so I drizzled it with calamansi juice and it came out even more delicious. And all that food only cost Php390. This was easily the winning dish of the day.

I went for the Katsu Curry Set which comes out at Php420. Mine was good as well. The katsu was fried perfectly and was not dry even if the pork slice was very lean and thick. It is sitting on top of a bed of Japanese curry with a couple of tender pork pieces in it. I like how the curry was mildly spiced but I would have loved it more if they threw in some vegetables in there.

Overall, it was a very satisfying lunch. The serving size was surprisingly big for the prize and all the extras that come with the lunch set made us feel like we were getting more that what we paid for. I would definitely go back to this restaurant and I will definitely get the Salmon Set next time.

 

 

I don’t really cook fish that much but around a month ago, an office friend shared her blood type diet to me. It entailed eating a few servings of fish every week and salmon is one of the fish varieties allowed for my blood type. This led me to experimenting in the kitchen and I was surprised that it actually turned out good. Well, at least good enough for my first try.

SINIGANG NA SALMON BELLY

Ingredients:

  • Salmon belly strips
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 4 tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 bunch of kangkong, leaves and upper stalks
  • ½ bunch sitaw, cut to around 3inches long each
  • 2 green chili peppers
  • ½ pack “sinigang sa sampalok” mix
  • Cooking oil, for sautéing the onion and tomatoes
  • 6 pcs calamansi, juice only
  • Fish sauce (patis), to taste
  • Water of your desired amount

 

Cooking Instructions:

  1. Heat cooking oil in a saucepan and sauté sliced onion.
  2. When onion turns translucent, stir in the sliced tomatoes.
  3. When the flesh of the tomato begins to separate from the skin, add patis and water.
  4. When the water boils, add the salmon belly strips and simmer for around 5 minutes.
  5. Add the sitaw and green chili peppers. After around 2-3 minutes, put in the kang kong.
  6. Squeeze in the calamansi juice and adjust the taste to your liking.
  7. When the kang kong leaves start to wilt, turn off heat.
  8. Enjoy with a bowl of freshly steamed white rice! 🙂

 

PAUL Boulangerie and Patisserie has been around in France since the late 1880’s. After more than 100 years, Filipinos get to vicariously eat ~authentic French~ pastries without leaving the country, thanks to the local franchise brought in by THE Ben Chan.

Luckily, one of the newly opened franchise is very near my office building and on a Friday, my teammates and I decided to have our lunch at PAUL (Bench Tower). While waiting for our orders to be served, we were dished out a complimentary bread basket with butter and jam, and olive oil with balsamic vinegar. The bread was so good especially when dipped in the olive oil and balsamic vinegar mix.

Allan and I split an order of Cream of Asparagus Soup which is their “Soup of the Day” (Phph110). Despite splitting an order between us, I still felt like the serving was generous. It came with an equally delicious slice of bread. I loved it!

Below are what my friends ordered.

“Poulet Citron” (Php280) | An open sandwich topped with marinated chicken breast in lemon and garlic garnished with chopped parsley served warm with a side salad.

“Tartine Saumon Fume” (Php320) | An open sandwich topped with smoked salmon, cucumber and soft white cheese served cold with a side salad.

“Tartine Boeuf” (Php300) | An open sandwich topped with sauteed beef, onions, fresh mushrooms and leeks topped with melted cheddar cheese served warm with a side salad.

“Cuisse de Poulet Rotie” (Php340) | Roasted chicken leg with herbs, served with salad, sauteed potatoes and shallots.

This is my order and it was the last to arrive on the table. Our server kept telling me that they were making sure that my chicken is thoroughly cooked before they serve it to me. I didn’t mind because who likes salmonella, right? And when it finally got to my table, I have to say it was worth the long wait! The chicken was indeed cooked well and perfectly seasoned. I also loved the potatoes but for was missing the shallots (no biggie). I would most probably order this again when I go back to the restaurant.

Overall, my first meal at Paul Boulangerie was very satisfying. Given the similar price range, I prefer this way more than TWG. Just saying. 🙂

A while back, a good friend of mine invited me to try out the Sushi Buffet at Sakae Sushi. Given the fact that I love Japanese food, I was up to the challenge. And he said he would pay for our meal so I didn’t need much prodding.

Sakae Sushi offers unlimited sushi at the reasonable price of P399 per head. This entitles you to grab any sushi you want from the conveyor belt, along with a bowl of Miso Soup and bottomless Green Tea (hot or cold). Sounds like a good deal, eh?

The sushi’s value are color coded based on the plates. Keep your eye out for the purple and red plates are these are the most expensive types.

I didn’t get to take a photo of every plate that we had. Below are the ones we sampled and I was able to capture before they got devoured.

Unfortunately, I don’t know the names of everything. I just grabbed whatever looked interesting from the conveyor belt. The sushi rolls were all good. But looking back now, I don’t think we were able to taste the classic California Maki. Weird. The orange looking thing in the lower right panel is Japanese rice wrapped in egg and soaked in some sort of sweet sauce. It was surprisingly good!

Upper left photo was not good. It tasted sooooo fishy! I suspect that this plate has gone around in the belt for a long time therefore it was not fresh anymore. The octopus on the other hand (upper right) tasted fresh. It had a slightly sweet taste and was not chewy at all.

If I remember right, the lower left photo is Kani Tempura. It was quite confusing though because I am not used to green crabsticks. Lower right is the usual tofu steak. It was OK but I like Teriyaki Boy’s tofu steak waaaay better.

This collage is all the Japanese rice wrapped in nori with different toppings. Every piece was huge and I was quite overwhelmed at first because I thought there was no rice in it and it was just nori stuffed with different things. However, upon biting into it, I felt cheated. It was filled with rice 3/4 of the way. LOL. I am not complaining though because nori is one of my favorite things in the world. I just had to be creative on how I can dispose off of the rice because I was already getting full at this point.

One of the very rare prime items in the belt is this salmon thingamajig. It was fried with some sort of breading then slathered with sweet and spicy sauce. The salmon tasted fresh and the spice level was just right. image

After around two hours, I couldn’t take any more rice. We had to order a can of Coke just to help us burp because we were bursting in the seams. Suffice it to say, I did not crave sushi for a long while after this.

Sakae Sushi is in SM Mall of Asia. P399 is quite cheap for such a ridiculous amount of food but do not expect anything authentic or gourmet level. I would probably go back, especially if someone is willing to pay for me again. LOL
